The Nuchatlaht Tribe Funeral Policy

A. Introduction
The Funeral Policy will financially assist any member from the Nuchatlaht First Nation.
​The Funeral Policy provides the Chief and Council and Administrative Staff with the administrative guidelines for funerals.

B. General
1. This policy shall be known as the Funeral Policy, and shall be used by all the Nuchatlaht members to assist in covering funeral costs and associated expenses,
2. The Chief and Council appoint the Band Manager to administer the Funeral Policy,
3. All financial documents shall be kept for a minimum of five (5) years in accordance with all statutory regulations.
C. Purpose
The purpose of the Nuchatlaht Tribe Funeral Policy is to financially assist all of its membership with the funeral costs and associated expenses upon submission of the attacthed application inclusive of all supporting documentation required.
D. Eligibility 
The estate trustee or next of kin of the deceased Nuchatlaht Tribe member, as identified on the Nuchatlaht Tribe Indian Registry list is eligible to apply for the funeral fund.
E. Allocation
Up to a maximum of $3,500 per deceased Nuchatlaht Tribe member. Next of kin or Estate Trustee may apply for funds associated with funeral expenses. 
F. Process for Requesting Funds
The next of kin or estate trustee must submit a written request and the appropriate application form as attached to this policy as Schedule A, as well as original documents and receipts requesting access to funeral funding under this policy to the Band Manager for approval, processing and disbursements of funds.
G. General Coverage
Typical services and expenditures which are eligible but not limited to for coverage include:
Funeral Services:
  • Funeral Home Services
  • ​Clothing for Deceased
  • Cremation
  • Clergy or officiate (includes Traditional)
  • ​Medical Certificate of Death​
  • Embalming
  • Casket
  • Urn
  • Transportation of remains
  • Burial or Cremation permit​

Cemetery Plot:
  • Perpetual Care
  • Interment
Memorials
Provincial/Legal Documents
Newspaper Obituary
Hospital costs associated with deceased care
Traditional Burial on Reserve:
  • Burial plot
  • Pine box for Casket
  • Community Feast
  • Traditional Facilitation
H. Disbursement of Funds
The funeral costs and associated costs upon approval of the application to be paid directly to the Funeral Home via Nuchatlaht Tribe purchase orders of to the applicant if the funeral costs owing to the Funeral Home have been paid. 
I. Funeral Policy Limitations
  • Policy not applicable to non-Nuchatlaht Tribe members as defined by the membership code
  • Disbursement of funds not to exceed $3,500 per deceased member
  • Funds will not be disbursed without required documentation, authorization and approval of the Band Manager

  • Funds for this Policy are subject to allocations through the annual Operating budget as approved by Chief and Council
  • This Funeral Policy supersedes all other such policies as administrated by the Nuchatlaht Tribe, at the effected date and shall remain in effect until such time as notified
