A message from our Tyee Ha'with (Chief), Jordan Michael
We are the Nuchatlaht Chief and Council. Some of you will know us well, others less so, and some will never have met us. We take this opportunity to tell you a bit about ourselves and how we will carry out our responsibilities on behalf of the Nuchatlaht. Before turning to individual introductions, I, as Chief, would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our previous Chief and previous Council members.
They have kept alive the Nuchatlaht vision and helped us move forward to achieving that vision. I recognize that to be effective in our roles and to meet our responsibilities, much will be expected of us. We are committed to protecting and promoting the well-being of the Nuchatlaht and to the development of governance policies and procedures that will support us in this important work.
We have an eye to the past, to the present and to the future. We respect the work of those who have stood in our roles before us, we are committed to meeting our responsibilities today, and we are mindful of the importance of ensuring a solid governance foundation for the community leaders of tomorrow.
Tomorrow is not a distant future. Much of our focus today is on matters that will continue to impact the community in the days to come. Today’s challenges of the pandemic will help us prepare for tomorrow’s health emergency. Knowing this, we are looking to putting in place a Nuchatlaht law to help us address future communicable disease outbreaks. Today’s title case litigation will be central to the economic health and well-being of our community in the future.
As Chief, I want to assure you that each of us, myself and Council members Erick Michael, Mellissa Jack and Archie Little, will work to ensure that the best interests of the Nuchatlaht community are promoted and protected. We are here for you.

Jordan Michael, Cheif (Hereditary Tyee Ha'with)
I started to get involved in the work that my father, Walter Michael, the late Tyee Ha’wilth, was doing in 2007. He did not want to see the community being taken advantage of and I wanted to support my father in that goal.
On my father’s passing, I inherited the honour and responsibilities of Tyee. It is my fighting spirit that will push for positive change for the Nuchatlaht. |

Archie Little, Elder & Councillor
I was born January 7, 1949. I grew up with our late Tyee Ha’wilth Walter Michael. We fished together, worked together, went to residential school together. Years ago, Felix Michael spoke to me, asking why we were disturbing the herring as they were spawning.
The “we” was everyone. The negative consequences of that and other choices continue to be felt today. We must learn from the mistakes made if we are to manage our fisheries better. I’m passionate about repairing the damage. |

Erick Michael, Councillor
I have seen first hand the struggles our younger members face, both in and out of community. I have a young son. I want things to be better, not just for my generation, but for my son’s generation, and generations to come.
Where there is pain, I want to see healing. If our members can’t reach help, I will advocate to bring the help to our members. |

Mellissa Jack
My name Mellissa and my traditional name is Tsee-tsak-sup. I have a passion for learning our History, Culture and Language, as well as Indigenous Politics.
I feel that by learning our history we can start to build a strong foundation. Strengthening my teachings through education, I thrive to have a balance of education and cultural teachings that guides me. I would like to see Nuchatlaht be a strong healthy community for generations to come as our ancestors would by lifting our people up. |
