Our Territory

Situated along the western coast of Vancouver Island, our territory spans from the northern-half of Nootka Island, to the inlets surrounding the community. Prior to residing in Oclucje in 1988, our ancestors reside on the Nuchatlitz reserve located on the northern part of Nootka Island since time immemorial.

NUCHATLITZ

Named after the old village of Nuchatlitz, which is located southwest of Zeballos, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, between Nuchatlitz and Esperanza inlets. The park protects a number of archaeological sites, evidence that the area has been inhabited for thousands of years by our ancestors by the abundance of natural resources.

Access to Nuchatlitz Park is by boat from Zeballos, 11 miles (18 km) to the northeast, or from Tahsis or Gold River. Many of the parks in the North Island are only accessible by floatplane or by boat. These exciting journeys present unparalleled views of the rugged and remote wilderness beauty that is the west coast of beautiful Vancouver Island.

Wilderness, backcountry or walk-in camping is allowed on the northwest tip of Nootka Island and the many small island groups within the park. There are some small developed sites accessible by kayaks and smaller boats at Rosa Island. Undeveloped but useable areas are scattered throughout the island groups and on the northwest coast of Nootka Island. Pit toilets are located at Rosa Island and at some of these other sites. This park is accessible year round; there is no fee for winter camping.

OUR TINY BUT MIGHTY COMMUNITY

Home to approximately 30-40 residents at any given time, the community of Oclucje consists of:
The Nuchatlaht Band Office, housing structures, a small park, local gym portable, basketball court, baseball field, and a Greenhouse.

In an effort to reduce our environmental footprint, we have started local initiatives to contribute towards a greener community. Starting with our greenhouse, and eventually leading to local composting and recycling. We have set-up designated areas to responsibly handle everything in-house.
